Fostering a long-lasting friendship, Alexandra and Oana have been both producing interdisciplinary projects, writing texts, and performing in different collective projects. They share similar interests in art as a process, experiment, memory, and psychogeography. This collaboration starts from the belief that there is a force in connection and friendship that will fuel art in the future. The piece functions as a dialogue/missed dialogue between two different voices. On the one hand, there is the meeting of each voice with the cities and with their own subjectivity. Simultaneously, there is a meeting between the two voices and their representations of reality. Narrating the cities becomes a gesture of narrating themselves in the world.
For Alexandra, these encounters take place at the limit of the biographic with fiction, via notions from critical theory, such as haunting realities, gaps, ghosts, the reappropriation of the notion of “flânerie,” walking as a deconstruction technique of reality. Narrating the travels in foreign cities becomes a gesture of reappropriation of something lost- something we never had the chance to as female artists: free time, leisure, holidays, family routines.
For Oana, writing about cities is a meditation about friendship, presence and absence. She talks about two types of subjective maps – the collective and the individual ones; when travelling in a group, the cities become ours, they are defined by our common presence. When travelling alone, the emotional texture of a place changes, and it is marked by absence (i.e. “it would be so good if X was here…”).
